However, the returning Mitchell May would be the difference between the two sides when he prodded home Jack Steventon’s header in the 68th minute.

The game started with Sittingbourne trying to get the ball down and implement their style of play on the near-perfect Staxson Stadium pitch, and despite having the lion share of possession, the best chance of the first half fell to Herne Bay. Rushaar Samuel-Smikle, who scored once in four appearances for Sittingbourne at the start of this season, almost came back to haunt his former club. His cut back was met by Zaid Al Hussaini who scored in the reverse fixture back in November, however he somehow fired high and from six yards out with just the goalkeeper to beat.

The first half finished goalless with both sides having to settle mostly for half chances and set pieces. At the break Bay manager Liam Friend made a change, bringing on Kamani Mcfarlane for Zaid Al Hussaini who had missed that glorious chance in the first half.

As was the theme of the first half, both sides would have to settle for half chances despite Sittingbourne’s possession. However, as the game grew, so did the Brickies’ dominance.

In the 67th minute Darren Foxley was introduced to the game, and within seconds his deep cross from the right was headed off the line and behind for a corner. Antonio Morgan’s resulting corner was headed into the ground by Jack Steventon, and just before the ball crossed the line Mitchell May was there to tap home the ball for his first goal since rejoining the club two weeks ago.

With a one-nil lead to protect, Prestedge’s men didn’t need to throw men forward, however they did come close to doubling the lead on a handful of occasions from set pieces whilst Rex Porter debuting in the Sittingbourne goal was rarely tested.

That win sets us up nicely for the big “six-pointer” at home to AFC Whyteleafe on Saturday (27th March), and you can buy your tickets from the link below:

Sittingbourne: Rex Porter, Gavin Hoyte, Antonio Morgan, Luke Woodward, Bagasan Graham ©, Jack Steventon, Henry Sinai, D’sean Theobalds, Mitchell May (Harvey Smith), Derek Asamoah (Jean Baptiste-Fischer), Jaden Crowhurst (Darren Foxley).

Sittingbourne 1-0 Herne Bay.
