Harvey Smith\u2019s sixth minute penalty was enough to end Sittingbourne\u2019s wretched start to September as the Brickies eased past newly promoted Punjab United in a close tense encounter.<\/p>\n

Despite their Cup form, the Brickies went into the game third in the table after three wins and a draw from their four League games thus far, and thanks to Smith\u2019s early spot kick \u2013 given after Darren Foxley had been pole-axed \u2013 things looked good for the visitors, but United dug in and had their chances\u00a0too\u00a0but when they did get past the impressive Dexter Peter and Reiss Greenidge at the heart of Sittingbourne\u2019s back line, found keeper Jamie Grossart back to his best.<\/p>\n

The only goal of the early kick off was netted before many team sheets had been exchanged in other games when Foxley danced into\u00a0the box only to be brought down, and Smith hammered the ball past Jacob Russell to\u00a0give Sittingbourne the lead<\/p>\n

Smith went close\u00a0again\u00a0with a low drive that Russell\u00a0just\u00a0watched\u00a0fly past the right post. Whilst kicking up the slope, Punjab slowly\u00a0got into\u00a0the game and\u00a0Grossart\u00a0had to be at his\u00a0very best\u00a0to tip over a\u00a0viscous\u00a0teasing cross from the\u00a0right.<\/p>\n

Harry Ottaway was lively throughout for the home side and from one of his runs down the left\u00a0his cross\u00a0was met by Jack Hopkins who was\u00a0brilliantly denied by\u00a0Grossart\u00a0to keep the Brickies in front at the break.<\/p>\n

Early in the second period, Bagasan Graham went close with a header that was cleared off the Punjab line at one end, whilst from their own corner the ball was allowed to bounce through the Sittingbourne box only to land at the feet of\u00a0 Ottaway but his ball back into the box didn\u2019t find a red shirt.<\/p>\n

Sub Joe Boachie was denied by Russell\u2019s legs after D\u2019Sean Theobalds had done well whilst Ottaway crashed a free kick over the bar. Luke Woodward had the game\u2019s final chance but was again denied by Russell and as the ball ran loose, Boachie crashed the ball over the bar.<\/p>\n

More of that needed for the Brickies to recapture the League form whilst Punjab now head\u00a0to Faversham on Tuesday still looking\u00a0to break their Isthmian League duck.<\/p>\n
